Yes, our temps are finallly getting cooler here in the Tri. Which means it’s time to bid farewell to sun-soaked days and welcome the season of falling leaves, crisp cool air, and of course, the infamous pumpkin spice lattes. Transitioning your home from summer to fall can be a delightful experience, and to help you make the most of it, here’s a checklist of five actionable items that people often forget to do.
1. Store Away Summer Essentials
Before you dive headfirst into fall décor, it’s essential to clear your space of summer items that you won’t be using for a while. This includes patio furniture, outdoor cushions, and pool toys. Make sure to clean and store them properly to ensure they’re in good shape for next summer. I’ve also put into storage outgrown kids clothes (that I’ve been procrastinating to put away for weeks), and transitioning my own closet to store away clothes that aren’t “bump friendly” for me during Fall and winter. (No pregnant mama should be uncomfy during the holidays!)
2. Check Your HVAC System
Fall brings cooler temperatures, so it’s crucial to ensure that your heating system is in working order. Schedule a professional inspection to clean and maintain your furnace or heating system. Consider changing the air filters, as well, to ensure optimal air quality throughout the fall and winter months. As a parent, there’s frankly too many things for me to remember, so I actually put a bi-annual reminder on my iphone to remind my hubby to change out our filters. And, I think this is the year I hire a duct-cleaning service to make sure our air quality is that much better during the cold season (especially with Bradley’s health).
3. Update Your Bedding
Swap out your lightweight summer bedding for heavier, cozier options. Invest in flannel or jersey sheets, thicker blankets, and a warm duvet or comforter. This small change can make a significant difference in your comfort level as the temperatures drop. I’ve also transitioned out our blankets and decorative pillows in both the living room and playroom.
4. Fall-ify Your Décor
Give your home a warm and inviting fall ambiance by incorporating seasonal decorations. I’m actually anti-seasonal decor unless it’s multi-use and can be used in various times of year because 1) I find it wasteful and 2) I don’t like storing extra junk my house. So my take on this is simple like: putting an autumn wreath that will eventually transition into a Christmas one by December, or switching out summer-themed throw pillows and curtains for ones with rich, fall-inspired colors and textures. Don’t forget to add some scented candles or diffusers with fragrances like cinnamon, apple, or pumpkin spice to fill your home with cozy aromas. My other go-to preference is by switching out all the hand soaps in the kitchen and bathrooms for fall themed scents.
5. Prepare Your Garden
If you have a garden, it’s essential to prepare it for the upcoming winter. Trim any overgrown shrubs or trees and clean up fallen leaves and debris. Plant fall flowers like mums or pansies for a burst of color. Consider covering delicate plants to protect them from frost, and don’t forget to disconnect and store garden hoses to prevent freezing.
Transitioning your home from summer to fall can be a rewarding experience that gets you into the spirit of the season. By following this checklist, you’ll ensure your home is comfortable, welcoming, and ready to embrace the beauty of autumn. So, gather your favorite fall-inspired decorations, cozy up with a warm blanket, and savor the magic of the changing seasons right in the comfort of your own home. (With a pumpkin spiced latte in hand of course.)
